Handoff Sheet: Session 20 & Course Closure
All 7 Outcomes • Session 20 • FINAL SESSION • End-of-Course Debrief
Purpose: This handoff addresses the final session, final exam closure, and preparation for what comes next.
Use it to manage student transitions, finalize grades, and document course completion.
Session 20 Summary
Topic: Course Synthesis and Final Exam
Outcomes: All 7 outcomes integrated and reviewed
Class Structure: Socratic (30 min) + Workshop (60 min) + Independent (30 min)
Pre-Session Prep (Thursday Morning)
Instructor Checklist
- ☐ Print or have available: Session 20 Reading, Socratic Guide, Worksheet
- ☐ Review final exam expectations and format requirements (Doc, PDF, printed, etc.)
- ☐ Prepare final exam guidance (folder structure, file naming, submission deadline)
- ☐ Review Session 19 Handoff Sheet to identify students needing support
- ☐ Flag any students scoring below 20/35 on Session 19 for follow-up conversations
- ☐ Have the Answer Key and rubrics ready for grading
- ☐ Prepare any additional resources (course summary slides, review notes)
During Session 20: Facilitation Notes
Socratic Discussion (1:30-2:00, 30 min)
Tone: Celebratory, reflective, NOT didactic
Key Goals:
- Students see the connection between all 7 outcomes
- Students articulate their own growth
- Build confidence before final exam work
Facilitation Notes:
- Use the Socratic Guide questions. Let silence breathe.
- When students share insights, affirm and dig deeper: "Say more about that."
- If the conversation feels flat, prompt with: "Let's look at one problem: quadratic equations.
How many different outcomes touched that problem?"
- Don't lecture. Your job is to draw out their thinking.
- Celebrate struggle: "You found logs confusing at first. What changed?"
Workshop (2:00-3:00, 60 min)
Student Tasks:
- Complete mixed-skills review (Part 1, ~20 min)
- Fill out final exam checklist (Part 2, ~10 min)
- Write final reflection (Part 3, ~15 min)
- Begin final exam assembly (if time permits)
Instructor Role:
- Circulate. Check in with each student. Ask: "How's it going? Any questions?"
- Identify confusion. If a student struggles with a mixed-skills problem, help them isolate the issue
(concept vs. arithmetic). Guide, don't solve.
- Support evidence selection. If a student seems stuck on which work to include, ask:
"Which problem do you understand the most? Where did you show all your work?"
- Encourage reflection. If reflection seems rushed or generic, say: "That's a start. Can you be more specific?
Which concept changed your thinking?"
- Note low performers. Mark which students finish early (high confidence) and which need reminders to stay on task.
This informs next steps.
Independent Time (3:00-3:30, 30 min)
Primary Goal: Complete final exam assembly and prepare for submission
What Students Do:
- Compile cover page, table of contents, evidence for all 7 outcomes
- Draft final exam reflection statements for each outcome
- Organize files or pages in order
- Review before submission
Instructor Support:
- Circulate. Answer format/organization questions.
- For students finishing early: "Everything look good? Any last questions before you submit?"
- For students struggling: "What's holding you up? Let's troubleshoot together."
After Session 20: Grading & Closure
Grading Workflow
Immediately After Session (by Friday EOD):
- Collect all worksheet submissions (Part 1, 2, 3)
- Grade Part 1 (mixed-skills) for accuracy and completeness using Answer Key
- Award Part 2 (checklist) points (completion-based)
- Use Reflection Rubric to grade Part 3 (final reflection)
- Record scores in gradebook
Final Grade Calculation (by specific date per institution):
- Sum all session workshop scores (Sessions 2-20)
- Include Session 20 reflection points (5 pts)
- Calculate course percentage based on your grading schema
- Award final exam completion credit (if applicable)
- Generate final grade
Student Performance Patterns to Watch For
High Performers (35+ pts on Session 20 worksheet)
Characteristics: All mixed-skills problems solved correctly, thoughtful evidence selections, reflective reflection.
Next Steps: Ready for next course (Precalculus, Trigonometry, etc.). Recommend in writing if applicable.
Mid-Range Performers (25-34 pts)
Characteristics: Some mixed-skills problems correct, solid final exam work, adequate reflection.
Next Steps: Review transcript. If all outcomes ≥20/35 across the course, student is competent and ready to move forward.
If significant weakness in one outcome, note for advisor (may want to retake or seek tutoring).
Low Performers (Below 25 pts)
Characteristics: Struggle with mixed-skills review, incomplete final exam, shallow reflection.
Next Steps: Schedule a one-on-one conversation. Ask:
- "What was most challenging about this course?"
- "Do you feel ready for the next math course, or would you like to repeat?"
- Recommend tutoring, office hours, or prerequisite review before advancing.
Grade Entry & Transcript Codes
Course Outcome Tracking: If your institution requires outcome-based grading, record:
- Outcome 1-7 Competency: Does the final exam evidence demonstrate competency (≥70% or equivalent)?
- Y (Yes): Evidence shows competency
- N (No): Evidence shows emerging understanding; student needs additional support
- U (Unassessed): No evidence submitted or incomplete final exam
Transcript Grade: Use institutional grading scale (A, B, C, etc.) based on total course points.
Course Completion Tasks
For Each Student
- ☐ Calculate final course percentage
- ☐ Assign letter grade per institutional scale
- ☐ Record outcome competency (Y/N/U)
- ☐ Enter grade in gradebook by deadline
- ☐ If grade is D or F, generate report per institutional policy
For the Course (Overall)
- ☐ Archive all Session 20 submissions
- ☐ Compile final grade distribution (A: __, B: __, C: __, D: __, F: __)
- ☐ Reflect: How did the course go overall? (Note for next semester)
- ☐ Identify areas for improvement (content, pacing, materials)
- ☐ Update course materials if needed
Communication After Session 20
Email to All Students (Saturday Morning, Post-Session)
Subject: MATH 102 Course Complete - Thank You
"Dear Class,
Yesterday marked the end of MATH 102 College Algebra. I want to thank you for the energy, questions, and growth you brought all semester.
You came in with questions about quadratics. You left solving exponential equations and connecting radicals to exponents.
That is real progress.
Next Steps:
- Your final grade will be posted by [date].
- If you have questions about your grade or feedback, email me to set up a time to discuss.
Moving Forward: If algebra felt solid this semester, you're ready for the next course.
If you feel like you need more time, talk to your advisor about your options. I'm happy to write a recommendation or provide resources.
Thank you for the privilege of being your instructor. Well done.
Best,
[Your Name]"
Individual Outreach (Optional)
For students scoring below 20/35 on Session 20 worksheet or below 70% overall:
- Send a one-on-one email inviting a debrief conversation
- Offer resources (tutoring, office hours, supplemental materials)
- Suggest next steps (repeat course, prerequisite review, etc.)
Instructor Reflection (For Your Records)
After course completion, reflect on:
- What worked well this semester? (Sessions, materials, student engagement)
- What would you change? (Pacing, topics, assessment design)
- Did the seven-outcome framework work? (Clarity, student understanding, assessment value)
- What did you learn about teaching algebra? About your students?
- How did the Socratic + workshop + independent structure serve students?
Use these reflections to improve next semester.
